Description: The panelists include the Heads of the Intellectual Property (IP) offices of Mexico and Chile, and the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. These panelists will bring three different perspectives to a discussion of various hot topics in biotechnology patent protection in the U.S. and Latin America. Topics will include: patent filing trends, unique and common challenges in patent examination, scope of subject matter eligible for patent protection, and recent legal and legislative developments impacting biotechnology patent protection in the three countries. This panel discussion will provide an overview of patent protection of biotechnology inventions and current issues facing each country. The panel will be moderated by a former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office official who oversaw the agency’s international policies and activities.

Description: In 2011, Brazil introduced the international student exchange program Science Without Borders to promote the consolidation and expansion of science, technology and innovation in Brazil. The government-funded program places Brazilian science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) students at international universities and research institutions. Three years later, this panel will explore the success of the program, how biotechnology companies are contributing and helping to build scientific capacity in Brazil and the needs of the students when they return to Brazil. The panel will feature a student who participated in the program and upon return to Brazil was hired to work for the company’s Brazilian affiliate.

Come to the annual Scientific American WorldView super session to hear a dynamic panel of international industry luminaries examine the future of global innovation in a lively candid conversation.
Moderated by television and radio journalist, David Brancaccio, host of Marketplace Morning Report, this event will explore key themes from Scientific American’s annual biotechnology edition, featuring the WorldView Scorecard and fresh perspectives on international life science development.
